Novodevichy Convent
is one of Moscow’s most fascinating places of interest after the Kremlin. The Convent is mentioned in historical chronicles in connection of works of fine and applied arts are a real treasure of Russian art.
The Convent is situated in Luzhniki, on a peninsula surrounded on three sides by the Moskva River. It is an ensemble of the 16th-17th century buildings intended for different uses. There are fortress towers, dormitories, auxiliary buildings, a bell tower, churches. Its architecture is very picturesque. It looks like a fairy-tale city. It became a museum in 1922.
The Convent was founded in the early 16th century to commemorate Russia’s great military and diplomatic victory. Many important historical events are closely connected with this place. It was as well as a convent and a residence of czar’s relatives, as well as a prison and a place of enthroning, it was place for billeting troops and the place of czar’s relative’s internment.
The Convent incorporates buildings of two different epochs; it has a layout strictly defined for an ensemble of this type. Here ancient and younger buildings are located to their purpose: public buildings – in the center, the dormitories and auxiliary buildings – on the outskirts. The 16th century buildings have monumental forms, while the building of the late 17th century are designed in the style of the so called Moscow baroque which was a further development of the forms evolved by Russian masters in the mid of 17th century. These buildings have carved white-stone ornaments with the red brick walls. All the buildings of the Convent are so laid out as could be seen from different angles.
